Fantasy Anthologies

There are two books which collect some of the best fantasy novellas and novelettes together. These books are known as Legends and Legends II. These books became known to me only because of George R. R. Martin's short story "The Hedge Knight" which is included in Legends. This short story takes place in GRRM's "A Song of Ice and Fire" universe.

Dragon Riders of Pern Books

The series has nineteen books and counting, and while characters drop in and out of the stories the major players are repeated in most of them in smaller or lesser roles. This is partly because some of the books feature overlapping timeframes, describing the same events from different viewpoints. Furthermore, McCaffrey has published novels in several different periods of Pern's history, some centuries apart. When reading for the first time it is generally recommended to go in the order the novels were written, as the details change slightly over time. On repeat reads, a chronological order may be preferred.

Boat Shopping

I went out today with my wife to shop for boats. She would like a boat to ski behind and I would like a boat to scuba dive from. Well, this trip nearly ended at a divorce laywer's office. Our two "wants" are nearly mutually exclusive. Dive boats are not skiboats and skiboats are not dive boats.

Online Hunters Education Course

Posted on August 10, 2007 by Stephen

I have taken the online course given by and passed. This is a very good course and allows me to attend a 4 hour class instead of the normal 14 hour class. The local 14 hour classes usually start at 6:00am and end at 8:30pm which a half hour lunch break. The online material at is very good and there is a lot to know. Study hard if you want to pass. You must scoure 68 correct out of 85 questions (80%) to pass. I have made a PDF copy of the whole site for California Hunters. You can grab my Hunter-Ed study guide here (4.5MB PDF).

Tor and Privoxy

Posted on August 07, 2007 by Stephen

I just wanted to push forward a great little piece of software that allows people to surf the net anonymously.

Tor: anonymity online
Tor is a toolset for a wide range of organizations and people that want to improve their safety and security on the Internet. Using Tor can help you anonymize web browsing and publishing, instant messaging, IRC, SSH, and other applications that use the TCP protocol. Tor also provides a platform on which software developers can build new applications with built-in anonymity, safety, and privacy features.

Privoxy is a web proxy with advanced filtering capabilities for protecting privacy, modifying web page data, managing cookies, controlling access, and removing ads, banners, pop-ups and other obnoxious Internet junk. Privoxy has a very flexible configuration and can be customized to suit individual needs and tastes. Privoxy has application for both stand-alone systems and multi-user networks.
