Concert at Villa Montalvo

Tonight was date night with my wife at Villa Montalvo. She had booked tickets to see David Benoit and David Sanborn.

The concert started at 7:00pm with David Benoit. He played some of his original works including some of the Peanuts themes (including The Great Pumpkin). To our surprise, he was joined on stage by Jeff Kashiwa the sax player well know for his work with the Rippingtons. That was a very neat addition that was unexpected. Michelle and I really enjoy seeing people that she has been in contact with through working with Dr. James Fujimoto. The bassist for Benoit was really good. He showed some real flare in slapping his bass during a solo.

David Sanborn started his set around 8:00pm. His band was more dynamic that David Benoit's band. The drummer was a machine. Not a literal machine, but an amazing rhythm section. He broke the head on his bass drum during one of the songs, and while the stage crew was repairing the drum head he kept the rhythm going while standing. The bassist didn't show off his prowess as much as the bassist for David Benoit's band, but there was talent in his fingers. The band played Chicago Song. YES! Sanborn made himself available after the concert to sign CDs.

The one drawback for the night was the sound engineer. The sound guy was not on his game. Jeff Kashiwa had to ask to be turned up during the concert and the keyboardist for Sanborn overpowered most of the band.

Houseboat Weekend

Michelle met me at work around 1:30pm on Friday. I didn't get a chance to get out to our boat to remove the snap-covers, but since we were leaving earlier than usual, we had time to get the boat prep'ed. There was a slim chance that we would not be able to go our usual route due to the fire in the hills near Corral Hallow Rd. I had mapped out several alternate routes. Normally, we head east on 580 and take the Westley Exit to Grayson all the way to Keyes and HWY 99 and then Monte Vista.

A Night out at the Theater

Our neighbor and good friend gave us some tickets to a local amphitheater. The night's entertainment was "Singing in the Rain". The venue was Woodminster Amphitheater in Oakland.
