"Do you believe that all children can be successful in the classroom, despite their circumstances?"

Recently on Facebook, a friend posed a question to all of his friends:

Dear Facebook friends, especially teachers. Please answer this question. "Do you believe that all children can be successful in the classroom, despite their circumstances?"

Here was my response:

That is a tough question. When I taught, I helped one of the worst performing students become the top performer by changing the way I taught. That change might have left some other students behind. Not everyone learns the same way. I also had a terrible student that interrupted class and made it hard to teach, but he was extremely bright despite the parent that kept telling him that he was stupid. Finally, what is the measure of success? A child that can think and question, find and discover, speak and listen are successful.
