2009 Christmas

This Christmas we had a lot of family come and go through the holidays. For Christmas we had my in-laws and an unexpected power outage.
The power outage started at 10:30pm on Christmas Eve just as we were going to bed. The power to the house seemed to drop to half the normal load. All of the lights dimmed and the refrigerators ceased to work. Apparently, Santa and his deer got drunk and wrapped themselves around the transformer for our neighborhood. The initial outage was for 5,500 customers. The electric company restored power to all but 700 customers my Christmas morning. We were one of the unlucky customers who were still out of power on Christmas morning. The power was not restored until 4:45pm Christmas Day. Thank goodness for gas stoves and Bar BQs. Most of our Christmas dinner was cooked on the gas stove (the gas oven would not light without the power being on--safety feature that could not be circumvented). I took the turkey out to the Bar BQ (in a turkey pan tented with foil) and cooked that dude at 350-400 for four hours. I basted it every 15 minutes--whole stick of melted butter (not margarine), 2 table spoons of garlic powder and a beer mixed in a coffee mug. I left the coffee mug on the Bar BQ to keep the butter/beer mixture from solidifying. Just before the turkey was done, the power was restored and we were able to finish the rest of the dinner fixin's with the oven. The dinner turned out well.
