Two dives today. Today was supposed to be bad with big swells. Dave and I arrived at Carmel River Beach at 8:30am to assess the conditions before making Monastery our dive spot. We crested the hill and saw minimal wave action. The sky was bright and sunny with very little breeze. We couldn't believe our luck, this was going to be a great dive. We suited up and walked to the edge of the ocean. It was a quick walk in and we slipped on our fins; kicking toward the edge of the kelp that is defined by the rocks on the north side. We took a heading of 315 before we descended next to the kelp. This dive was a simple out and back with a few twists. We kicked along our heading until we reached the thick kelp and then we kicked parallel with the kelp on our right-side. We swam right into a large school of sea bass. A few 2 foot ling cod (Ophiodon elongatus), numerous Nudibranch, sun starfish (Heliaster spp.) or were they sunflower stars (Pycnopodia helianthoides), sheep crabs (Loxorhynchus grandis), Bat Stars (Asterina miniata), etc. Our return path was 135.
